FARE MINDED; MAMMA LUCIA: OLNEY'S SLICE OF ABUNDANCE

Eve Zibart, WASHINGTON POST - July 2000 Weekend section

MAMMA LUCIA is the kind of place that keeps the elastic industry in business. Most of the dishes could easily be halved and doggy-bagged, especially since the pastas come with salad and bread, and the poultry and veal dishes come with all three. The $7.95 appetizer platter of calamari--fat fried rings the size of shirt cuffs, served with lemon wedges and fine marinara sauce for dipping--is as big as a football or an oven roaster and could probably, with a couple of salads, serve as light fare for two. "Just so you'll know," as one slightly overwhelmed customer put it.

Down Home Italian Cooking in Rockville and Olney

David Dorsen, WASHINGTON POST - July 2000 Washingtonian magazine

Capitalizing on its success in Rockville, the down-home Italian eatery Mamma Lucia has added a second and larger operation in Olney. The cooking is basic Italian, focusing on the south, with plenty of pasta, pizza, main courses, and the expected desserts. The main courses come with pasta, although mixed vegetables, either steamed or with a tomato sauce, may be substituted. Don't assume that this is just another up-scale Italian version of a fast-food emporium. It's much better. Care is given to the selection of ingredients as well as to the cooking. At a recent lunch in Olney, linguine with white clam sauce was cooked to order, and the clams were whole and fresh - good for $7.95, including garlic bread. At dinner, two can eat for aneywhere from $25 (sharing a large pizza with a soft drink or beer) to more than $80 (appetizers, seafood main courses, desserts, and a $21 bottle of wine).
